MARES is launching the Barco Escuela Project—a scientific research and educational vessel that will serve as a floating classroom for students, universities, and researchers. We are seeking supporters and investors to help us acquire and equip the vessels, creating hands-on opportunities for education, conservation, and marine research while inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards.

In 2018, the Coastal Groundwater Inundation Group was formed to study an invisible threat: seawater rising underground due to sea level rise. This hidden flooding damages infrastructure, from roads to drainage systems, even without rain. Mitigation is costly, but inaction could be catastrophic making monitoring, modeling, and proactive adaptation essential for Puerto Rico’s coastal future.

In 2018, Loíza launched its Community-Based Climate Change Adaptation Plan to confront rising seas, stronger storms, and fragile infrastructure. Centered on community action, digital tools, and local leadership, the plan empowers residents to build resilience. Its success depends on sustained funding, collaboration, and the active role of the Loíza Climate Action Team (LCAT).
